History
Zakynthos is an ancient Achaean settlement. Systematic excavations to discover ancient settlements have not yet been carried out.
In 1185, Zakynthos was captured by the Normans, which provided a tangible Western influence on the urban appearance and architecture. The long domination of the Republic of Venice (XIV-XVII century) left its mark on the general appearance of the city. Following the model of St. Mark's Square in Venice, the city of Aiu Marco Square, on which the St. Mark's Catholic Church is located, arose. Also, the first music school in modern Greece was founded in Zakynthos, and with the weakening of Venetian and English domination in the 18th and 19th centuries, literature flourished. The representative of this culture is the famous poet Dionysios Solomos . In 1864, British domination ended, and the city as part of the Ionian Republic officially became part of Greece. After World War II, the city received appreciation for the actions of its mayor Lucas Carrera and the Greek Orthodox bishop during the German occupation from September 1943 to October 1944: almost 300 Jews were sheltered.
The city suffered many times from strong earthquakes, but was rebuilt each time. The last major earthquake was on August 12, 1953, which almost completely destroyed the city. The reconstruction was based on old building plans so that the city could maintain its former appearance. Today Zakynthos is a mixture of new buildings and reconstructed buildings.
The Museum of Solomos and other prominent figures of Zakynthos, restored in 1957 and opened in 1966 [3], is located on Aiu Marku Square. Zionynthos Museum, built in 1959, is located on Dionisiu Solomu Square [4] . In 2013, a bronze bust of the famous Russian naval commander Fedor Ushakov was placed near the walls of the church of St. Dionysius.
