Cumulation (literary criticism)

Cumulation (in literary criticism and folklore ) ( Latin cumulatio - increase, accumulation) - a term used in different meanings:

  1. A method of constructing compositions of chronicles and multi-linear narrative and dramatic plots . Events in chronicles do not have causal relationships and are related to each other only in time, as is the case, for example, in the Odyssey of Homer, Don Quixote of Cervantes , Don Giovanni Byron . In multilinear plots , simultaneously, parallel to one another, several event lines unfold, associated with the fate of different individuals and touching only occasionally and externally. Such is the plot organization of “ Anna Karenina ” by L. N. Tolstoy and “ Three Sisters ” by A. P. Chekhov .
  2. A method of constructing a plot composition of folklore works , which consists in attaching homogeneous motifs in a certain order to the indicated limit.

Speaking of cumulation in folklore, we mean traditional folklore, not post-folklore , where the archaic principle of plot construction has become unpopular. The cumulative principle is applied in ritual folklore ( conspiracies ), in fairy tale folklore ( fairy tale ), in children's folklore (lullabies, petals, nursery rhymes, calls, counters, children's humorous folklore).
