Player Career

Chenol Gunesh at the beginning of his career was the goalkeeper of the amateur team “ Erdogdu Genclik ”. Later, he moved to the club of the top division " Trabzonspor ", in which he spent 15 seasons. Together with his club, he won 6 championship titles from 1975 to 1984.

Coach Career

After the end of his playing career, Shenol became an assistant coach in his native club. In 1994, he was appointed head coach of Trabzonspor . After the unsuccessful finish of the 1995/96 season, in which Trabzonspor lost the fight for the Fenerbahçe championship, only 2 points behind, Chenol Gunesh leaves the club. After that, he was alternately the coach of the following teams: Boluspor , Istanbulspor , then again Trabzonspor , Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor .

In 2000, Gunesh unexpectedly for many became the head coach of the Turkish national team . Under his leadership, the team completed the qualifying round for the 2002 World Cup in second place in their group, which allowed it to get into the final part of the World Cup for the first time in 48 years. In the butt match, the Austrian national team was replayed with a score of 5: 0. At the World Cup in Japan and Korea, the Turkish team managed to break into the semifinals, where they lost 1-0 to the future winners of the tournament to the Brazilians . In the match for third place, the Turks defeated one of the hosts of the championship team of South Korea with a score of 3: 2, and won bronze medals. This success brought Gunesh the title of “Coach of the Year 2002” according to UEFA .

After the Turkish national team under his leadership was unable to break into the final of the 2004 European Championship , having lost in the butt match of the Latvian national team , Gunesh was dismissed from his post as head coach of the national team. After that, for the third time in his career, he became the head of Trabzonspor, who coached from 2004 to 2006. After a series of setbacks, he left Trabzon , and in 2007 signed a three-year contract with FC Seoul .

On June 11, 2015 he was appointed head coach of the Besiktas club. The contract was signed for 2 years with the possibility of extension for another 1 year [1] . With the Istanbul team, Gunesh won the Turkish championship twice in a row, thus winning the first championship titles in his career.

On February 28, 2019, the official website of the Turkish Football Federation announced that Gunesh would once again take the post of head coach of the Turkish national team, starting work on July 1 [2] .
