The population is 10,086 inhabitants ( 2001 ), the majority are Khashis .
The city is located on the Shillong plateau , north of the border with Bangladesh , at an altitude of 1313 m above sea level .
Cherapunji is one of the wettest and wettest places on Earth (11,777 mm per year). [1] Weather records recorded in Cherapundji:
