The city is located on Lake Pheva , a picturesque view of the Himalayas (the Great Himalayan Range) with eight-thousand peaks ( Daulagiri , Annapurna , Manaslu ) opens from the city. For this reason, the city is very popular among tourists. A number of trekking routes begin from Pokhara.
Nevari , gurungs , Magars , Chhetri , Thakali and other peoples of Nepal live in the city. Since the 1950s , many Tibetan refugees who initially lived in camps have settled in the Pokhara Valley.
In the 1960s, the city was opened by hippies who organized numerous settlements in the valley. After King Birendra changed the visa policy for foreigners, the hippies were forced to leave Nepal, but a tourist boom began in the city, which decreased due to the civil war in Nepal .
Currently, the city has a Lakeside tourist area located directly along Lake Pheva. The area is concentrated hotels, restaurants, companies serving the needs of tourists.
The city also has many paragliding clubs , 30 minutes from the city there is the peak of Sarangkot, from where most of the flights, both solo pilots and tandems, are carried out. The popularity of this place for paragliders is due to the relatively mild thermal conditions, allowing for flights of inexperienced pilots, and the initial training of pilots in thermal flights.
