Shevchenkovsky district ( Ukrainian Shevchenko district ) - the second largest of 9 districts of the city of Kharkov , located in the northern part of the city . Established in 1932 . Named in honor of the poet and artist Taras Shevchenko . Until 2016, it was called Dzerzhinsky in honor of Felix Dzerzhinsky , at whose initiative in the area was built Gosprom . One of the two central districts of Kharkov.

The oldest part of the district, which is related to modern Kharkov, the University Hill , was settled in a new way and built up on the site of an old Russian Kharkov settlement in the middle of the 17th century (between 1630 [2] and 1653 [3] years).

General Information
The housing stock covers 22% of the area, and the population is 15% of the total population of the city. There are 1055 residential buildings with a total area of 3973.0 thousand sq.m.
In the area there are Liberty Square , a monument to Taras Shevchenko , the Gosprom building, a large number of educational institutions. In the years of the Soviet Union, Kharkiv ranked first in the number of universities located in it, much of which is located in the Shevchenko district. One of the features of the area is that there are no large industrial enterprises.
The Lopan River with the Alekseevsky Reservoir and Meadow Park, the Lozovenka River (left tributary Lopani), Alekseyevka (left tributary Lopani), Sarzhinka (left tributary Lopani), Sarzhin Brook (right tributary Sarzhinka) flow through the district.
In the area is Sarzhin and Aleksiyev (the longest in the city) yars.
History
The district was originally named in honor of F.E. Dzerzhinsky , after whom the central city square was also named (since 1996, Svoboda Square) located in the district. On the square is the famous Gosprom , whose construction was carried out with the assistance of Dzerzhinsky. On February 3, 2016, the district was renamed Shevchenkovsky in honor of the poet T. G. Shevchenko , whose monument and garden are located in the district.
The district includes a significant part of the city center, residential areas Pavlovo Pole , Shatilivka , Alekseyevka .
The founding day of the Shevchenkovsky (Dzerzhinsky) District is November 1, 1932 (counting down from the date of the first session of the Dzerzhinsky District Council, which took place that day).
