The national park is located in the Knock Mountains, in Carinthia . To the west of the Knock Mountains lies the High Tauern , to the north the Lower Tauern , and the Carnian Alps to the south. The Knock Mountains are lower than all their neighbors and differ significantly in geological structure - there are no steep peaks, most of the peaks are rounded, and extensive meadows lie between the hills. The middle part of the park is the highest zone with alpine meadows and pastures; forests are located along the outskirts of the park.
The park is home to many animals, including rare and endangered species, the flora of alpine meadows is strictly protected.
