Biography

He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Kossman and Fitzenhagen from 1868 to 1877 (graduated from the Gold Medal), and also studied the theory of music under Tchaikovsky . From 1878 to 1905 he spent a lot of time in Switzerland and France , especially in Paris , where he often met with Ivan Turgenev . In France, Brandukov soon became a member of the Marten Marsik quartet, and also performed as a soloist, performing, in particular, the First Saint-Saens cello concerto with an orchestra conducted by the author.

Almost every year, Brandukov visited Russia, where he became close friends with leading representatives of musical culture, including Anton Rubinstein , Anna Yesipova , Leopold Auer and Sergei Rachmaninov . In 1890, Tchaikovsky proposed the candidacy of Brandukov for the position of professor of the cello class at the conservatory, which was vacated after Fitzenhagen’s death, but the director Vasily Safonov refused him, considering Brandukov too young for this post.

In 1906, Brandukov was invited to the post of director and professor of the Music and Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. After the revolution, the musician was active in music education, and performed a lot. In 1921 he received a professor’s position at the conservatory and taught in it until his death.

He was buried at the Vvedensky cemetery in Moscow.

Creativity

Brandukov is one of the most prominent Russian cellists. His performance was distinguished by a lively temperament and a beautiful, melodious sound of the instrument. The musician is dedicated to a number of compositions for cello, including Tchaikovsky's Pezzo capriccioso and Rachmaninoff's Sonata for cello and piano. He played the cello of the famous Venetian master Domenico Montagnan . Brandukov’s own works for cello are little known, some of the surviving manuscripts are kept in the Tchaikovsky Museum in Klin .
