Lamía [3] ( Greek Λαμία ) is a city in Greece , the administrative center of the community of the same name , the ftyotida peripheral unit and the periphery of Central Greece . It is located on two hills at an altitude of 100 meters above sea level [1] , southwest of the Otris ridge, on the left bank of Sperkhios , near the Gulf of Maliakos of the Aegean Sea [4] , 180 kilometers northwest of Athens . The population of 52,006 people according to the 2011 census [2] .

The city is a major transportation hub. The city is the railway station line . North of Lamia, near the village of there is a narrow passage ( φούρκα ) northwest to Thessaly . On the eastern outskirts of the city passes the Levadia - Larisa . connects Lamia with Karpenisi . Southeast is the Freeway 1 Piraeus - Athens - Thessaloniki - Evzoni .
The center of a large agricultural region with fertile lands and developed animal husbandry. In Lamia, by the decree of the Greek government , the University of Central Greece was founded in April 2003 . In Lamia there is a School of Science ( Σχολή Θετικών πιστημών ) of the University of Thessaly .

History
Founded in the V century BC. er [4] According to legend, the city was founded by , the son of Hercules and Omphala [6] , or Lamia, the queen of Trachinia . Lamia was subject to king Achilles [7] . From 413 BC. er was the capital of Malida . Was strongly fortified. Preserved ruins fortifications. Under King Philip II ( 359 - 336 BC. E. ) Fell under the influence of Macedonia . The Lamian War (323-322 BC) broke out around Lamia between the Macemodyans under the command of Antipater and the Athenians, in which the Athenian commander Leosphinus and Leonnat , Eter of Alexander the Great , were killed [7] . Lamia Archaeological Museum
is located on the ground floor of the barracks, built under Otton I inside the walls of the Byzantine fortress on the site of an ancient acropolis that existed from the 5th century BC. er The barracks building was used until World War II . In 1871 the building was destroyed by the explosion of a powder keg. In 1973, the Ministry of Defense transferred the building to the Ministry of Culture. In 1984, the Lamia community began repairs and on September 25, 1994, a museum was opened [10] .
