Biography

Winter. Ice crack

Arseniy Ivanovich Meshchersky was born in 1834 in the Vyshnevolotsky district of the Tver province . Information about the parents of this painter was not preserved. But there is an opinion that somehow the painter belonged to the noble family of the Meshchersky. But its origin is still controversial, and its early biography is full of secrets and mysteries. During this period, young Arseny takes up pencils and paints. The young man is led by creative intuition, which is inherent in many artists, as well as the instructions of the first teacher. The boy makes the first drafts. The name of the first teacher of the boy remained a mystery to historians.

In 1854 , when Arseny was 20 years old, he already had a thorough artistic training. He was enrolled as a freelance student at the Imperial Academy of Arts , where he studied for three years under the guidance of F.A. Bruni , S.M. Vorobyov , T.A. Neff . By that time, Meshchersky was no longer a debutant in this matter. Next year he is already participating in an academic exhibition. On it, he presents two landscapes: β€œView in the vicinity of Oranienbaum” and β€œView of the Peter and Paul Fortress”. For these paintings Meshchersky receives a small silver medal.

But not a single direction exists in its pure form, therefore traditions make themselves felt. The year 1857 brings Arseny Meshchersky a new fortune. For his painting β€œMorning in the vicinity of the city of Friedrichsgamen”, the Academy awarded Arseniy a large silver medal. Also in the same year, Meshchersky decides to leave the walls of the Academy and leave classes. There were also rumors that Meshchersky, at his own expense or at the expense of his senior patron, was sent to improve his painting in Switzerland .

Nevertheless, for the painting β€œThe Swiss Look” presented at the 1859 Academic Exhibition , Meshchersky receives not even a small, but immediately a large gold medal , the title of a class artist, and the right to pension abroad. Later, he was widely recognized in Russia and abroad, and also became a professor at the Academy of Arts.

In 1864, A. I. Meshchersky again returned to his homeland. Here he lives in St. Petersburg, but occasionally visits Finland , the Baltic states and the Caucasus .

The year 1867 was significant for Arseny. A. I. Meshchersky was entrusted to accompany the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich on his trip around the world.

In 1876, for his painting "The View at the Origins of Rion," Meshchersky was awarded the title of professor [2] .

In the late 1870s and early 1880s, Meshchersky regularly participated in academic exhibitions at the Art Exhibitions Society established at the Academy [2] .

Contemporaries of Meshchersky claimed that 1879 became fatal for him. Meshchersky was very ill. Soon Arseny lay down. Pneumonia did not let him out of his tight, stuffy embrace for almost two months. At some point, the doctors lost hope of saving the artist. And he himself, exhausted by a fever and chest-shaking cough, did not hope too much for recovery. He begins to suffer from asthma attacks, which greatly complicated his existence, especially with the onset of cold weather.

In 1886, Arseny Meshchersky was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 3rd degree "for special works in the artistic field." Throughout 1898 Meshchersky travels. He visited Turkey, Mount Athos and some islands of the Greek archipelago, again visited Italy and Switzerland.

In mid-November 1902, in the newspaper Novoye Vremya , an obituary appeared among numerous advertisements offering to buy either Gollender soap, a pair of saddle horses with a carriage, or gloves from the best foreign skins.

He reported that "on November 13, Arseny Ivanovich Meshchersky, a professor of landscape painting who once enjoyed great popularity in the art world of St. Petersburg, died of asthma ... He was most successful at mountain landscapes and winter motifs."

Arseny Meshchersky’s works are exhibited in the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery [2] .
