Tien Shan brown bear [1] lat. Ursus arctos isabellinus ) is a separate subspecies of brown bear ( lat. Ursus arctos ) that lives in the mountains of the Pamirs , Tien Shan and the Himalayas . It has a relatively small size: body length up to 140 cm, weight up to 300 kg. However, there are very large individuals. Since 2005, the Bear’s Corner Biological Station of the Losiny Ostrov Foundation in Moscow has been home to a 24-year-old (in 2017) almost three-meter 700-kilogram giant Dobrynya, of a dark brown color with a fawn “collar”, a favorite of local children [2] . The main distinguishing feature is long, light claws on the forelegs. The Tien Shan brown bear is omnivorous . Childbirth occurs in the winter in the den, usually 1-2 cubs are born. [3]

Status: 3 category. A rare species whose range and abundance are declining.
Distributed on the Tien Shan ranges: Karzhantau, Ugam, Talas, Kyrgyz, Zaili, Kungei, Terskey, Ketmen, as well as in the Dzungarian Alatau with peripheral mountains Altyn-Emel, Toksanbai, Koyandytau, Kaikan. In the 40s of the XX century. disappeared in the Syrdarya Karatau [4] .
It is one of two subspecies of brown bear in the fauna of Kazakhstan and from 6-7 subspecies in the fauna of the CIS. It is protected in the reserves of Aksu-Dzhabagly, Alma-Ata, the reserves of Alma-Ata, Lepsinsky and Toktinsky [5] .
