Perim ( Arabic: Barym بريم), or Mayun ( Arabic: Miun ميون) is an island of volcanic origin in the Strait of Mandeb that divides it into the Great, or Dakt al-Mayun ( Arabic: Diqqat-al-Mayun دقة المايون) , about 20 km wide, and Small, or Bab-Iskander ( Arabic: Bab-Askindr باب اسكندر). The width of the latter is about 3 km. The area of the island belonging to Yemen is 13 km².

Names
In ancient times it was known as “the island of Diodorus” ( dr. Greek Διοδώρου νῆσος , ῆσος ή Διοδώρου , lat. Insula Diodori ) [1] .
Population
The lack of fresh water on Perima prevents the existence of a permanent settlement on it.
History
- The Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque landed on Perima in 1513 , but did not stay there to confront the Ottoman Empire, whose naval base was in Suez (Red Sea).
- The island was occupied by the French in 1728 and remained the possession of France until the end of the 18th century.
- It was occupied by the British East India Company in 1799 in preparation for the invasion of Egypt .
- In 1857, it was reoccupied by Great Britain and subordinated to its Aden settlement .
- In 1861, a lighthouse was built on Perima [2] .
- Since 1869 , the island of Perim served as a coal station, on which ships going through the Suez Canal were refueled with coal.
- In 1912, the lighthouse was rebuilt to a height of 24 meters. [3]
- In 1916 , Turkish troops tried to capture the island, but were repelled.
- Since 1967, Perim has been a part of South Yemen ; after the unification of the country - in the possession of the state of Yemen .
The Yemen-Djibouti Bridge Project
The proposed bridge, called the Bridge of the Horns , connecting Yemen and Djibouti via Perim, was announced in 2008 by Dubai-based Al Noor Holding Investments. This bridge, with a length of about 28.5 km, should be one of the longest bridges in the world.
