In 1979, he volunteered for the regional branch of the Red Cross in the Canary Islands . In 1994, he was elected President of the Spanish Red Cross . From 2001 to November 2009, he served as President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies . Since 2009, he has been president of the Spanish Red Cross .
