Beginning of the path

He was the youngest of four sons in the family of the musician Hillel Haimovich Geringas (1911-1980), who served in the 16th Lithuanian Division [1] [2] . The elder brother is the Israeli composer Beni Gilin (Beni Gilevich Geringas, born 1935) [3] [4] [5] .

In 1963 - 1973 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of cello under M. Rostropovich . In 1970 he won a gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition .

Wife - pianist Tatyana Shatz-Geringas (nee Schatz) [6] .

Creative career

He has performed with the largest orchestras in the world - the Berlin Philharmonic , the Hamburg Symphony , the Bamberg Symphony , the London Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra , the N.H.K. Symphony Orchestra and others, under the direction of prominent conductors from Michael Gilen and Wolfgang Zavallish to Semyon Beyonich .

The cellist’s repertoire extends from Bach and Mozart to Gubaidulina , Lepo Sumera and Peteris Vask . He played in ensembles with G. Kremer , K. Kashkashyan , Nobuko Imai , V. Tretyakov , D. Sitkovetsky , Y. Nemtsov , Baiba Skride and other instrumentalists. Criticism and prizes marked his performance of the Boccherini sonatas, works by Pfitsner and Dutiyo .

As a conductor, he worked with orchestras in Europe, Mexico , Costa Rica , Japan , and China .

Teaching activities

He taught at the Hamburg Higher School of Music and Theater ( 1977 - 1986 ), the Lübeck Higher School of Music , since 2001 he has been teaching at the Berlin Higher School of Music . Among his students are Sol Gabetta , Ramon Jaffe, Johannes Moser, Boris Andrianov.
