Biography
Born in Sichuan near Chongqing in a wealthy family. In 1920, together with a group of Chinese students, he went to study in France, where he met Zhou Enlai . In 1923 he joined the Communist Party. In 1924 - 1925 he studied in the USSR . After returning to China, he worked in the political department of the Wampu Academy , led by Zhou Enlai.
After the split between the Kuomintang and the Communists - in the red army of China. During the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945 he was an assistant commander of the 115th division.
During the civil war of 1947 - 1948, he commanded the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Soviet district . He surrounded the Kuomintang troops under the command of General Fu Zuoy in the area of Beijing and Tianjin . After a month-long siege, Fu Zuoy surrendered without a fight and the largest centers of northern China came under the control of the Communists .
After the end of the civil war in 1949 - 1951 he was mayor of Beijing . In 1950 - 1954 - Chief of the General Staff of the PLA . In 1955, he was awarded the title of Marshal. In 1958 - 1970 - head of the State Committee for Science and Technology , headed the nuclear program of China .
