At the age of 19, under the threat of expulsion from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and draft to the Hungarian army, the leadership of the academy was forced to switch from violin to viola. After long difficulties, he graduated from the Academy in 1970 under the leadership of Pal Lukacs, taking third place at the international viola competition held for the first time at the Academy, and in 1972 he became the first and only viola player to win the London Karl Flash Competition (mostly for violinists ) After this victory, he stayed in the UK, studied privately under the direction of Lionel Tertis (according to Erdeli’s recollections, Tertis had a great influence on him, in all the nuances he examined the phrasing and fingering of a number of works, including the Viola Concerto and William Walton Orchestra).
