Development
Created on the basis of the Soviet 120-mm mortar arr. 1938 at the end of 1942. The main difference, visible visually, is a horizontal-type drum-like wheel instead of a crank handle.
In 1941, the Germans captured several hundred serviceable Soviet 120-mm mortar arrays as trophies. 1938, and in occupied Kharkov they got technological documentation for this mortar. After the tests, it was decided to start production of such a mortar.
Production
Mass production of the mortar began in 1943. The first mortars entered the troops in January of that year.
