The coat of arms of the Philippines was adopted in 1940 . This is a shield with the sun of the Philippines in the middle, 8 rays of which represent 8 regions ( Batangas , Bulakan , Cavite , Manila , Laguna , Nueva Esih , Pampanga and Bataan ); three five-pointed stars representing three island groups: Luzon , Visaya and Mindanao , constituting the Philippine archipelago . In reminder of the colonial past of the Philippines, in the blue area of the coat of arms there is a bald eagle - the national symbol of the United States , in the red area on the right - a rising lion - a symbol of the former domination of Spain .
