"Herr Mannelig" ( Swede. Herr Mannelig ) - a medieval Scandinavian folk ballad , along with In taberna is one of the most famous works of medieval folk music. First recorded in Swedish at Nykoping ( Södermanland , Sweden) in 1877. [one]
The ballad tells of a woman troll who was in love with the knight Mannelig and wanted to become a man. According to the legend prevailing in Scandinavia, a troll could become a person if another person fell in love with him. However, despite all the magic gifts promised by the trollich, Herr Mannelig rejected her love, especially emphasizing that the trollich was not a Christian .
The ballad has a number of slightly different variations of the melody and is translated into several languages, including English , German , Italian , Russian , Belarusian , etc.
