Story
Wizard Gandalf addresses the hobbit Bilbo Baggins with a proposal to help thirteen dwarfs : Thorin Duboschit, Dvalin, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Ohin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur - to return the treasures of the Piedmont Kingdom , which were seized by the dragon Smog. .
Bilbo is hired as a cracker. In the beginning, they almost become a trolls' dinner, but the morning light turned them to stone. In time came to the rescue Gandalf frees the dwarves. In the troll cave, they discover many stolen swords, including the lost elf swords Glamdring and Orchrist , which they decide to take with them. So Bilbo has his sword (more precisely, the dagger), which he later calls Sting .
In the cave, Gandalf transmits to Torin the map of the Lonely Mountain presented to him by the father of Torin, which contains a secret that will help you find the secret entrance to Erebor and the keys to it. Later, the company falls into the possession of the elven king Elrond - Rivendell , where he helps to translate the moon runes of the map of Erebor, indicating the secret entrance to the Lonely Mountain. Then the company is captured by the goblins , from which Gandalf again rescued them in time.
While fleeing from the city of goblins, Bilbo falls into Gollum's cave, where he finds a magic ring that makes him invisible. Bilbo later finds Gollum himself, who promises to take him to the exit if Bilbo wins the contest of riddles. Bilbo wins by asking, “What is in my pocket?” Later, Gollum discovers the loss of “his charms” (as he calls his ring) and rushes to the back door, thinking that Bilbo ran off with his ring there, unaware that Bilbo is in fact, becoming invisible, follows him, which helped him to get out.
Getting out of the cave, the team wanders into Mirkwood , where they have to fight with giant spiders. However, the gnomes are captured by forest elves who decide that the gnomes are going to attack them. Taking advantage of the ring and becoming invisible, Bilbo avoids captivity. Having reached the palace of King Thranduil , where they were imprisoned, Bilbo discovers that the forest elves are very fond of wine, and empty barrels are floated down the river to the Lake City where people live and which is very close to their goal - the Lonely Mountain. Having stolen the keys from a drunken guard, Bilbo frees his friends and puts them in barrels. So they get to Esgaroth, where guard Bard meets them and promises to give them everything they need.
From Esgarot the heroes reach their goal - they reach the Lonely Mountain. Gnomes find a secret entrance and decide to send the hobbit alone to the hall where the dragon Smog lives. Bilbo, wearing a ring, goes there. There he meets a dragon, who, however, sensed him. After a brief conversation, the dragon takes Bilbo for a man from Esgaroth. Bilbo runs away, but he managed to see the weak point of the dragon on his belly. Smog flies out of Erebor and is going to destroy Lake City in a rage. Bilbo sends a thrush to Bard, who tells him about the weak point of the dragon. Bard kills Smog, and the dwarves regain their wealth, which became the cause of the quarrel between humans and elves with the dwarves who did not wish to share their wealth.
Bilbo tries to persuade Thorin to share the treasure, which caused his quarrel with the leader of the gnomes. And at that moment, when the three armies are about to descend from the battle, Gandalf stops them and informs them of the impending goblin army. Kings leave the old insults and unite in the face of a common enemy. The battle begins. Later, giant eagles , friends of Gandalf, arrive on the battlefield, having once saved the company from goblins not far from Light Woods, which largely determined the outcome of the battle. 6 of 13 dwarfs who went to Erebor die in battle. Thorin dies from his wounds and makes up with Bilbo before he dies. The Hobbit returns to the Shire with two bags of gold and his magic ring.
Production
The plot of the film follows closely enough the original (which screenwriter Romeo Muller himself considered worth), but some details are still changed: Beorn is missing, everything related to Arkenston is released , many more dwarfs who went with Thorin and Bilbo died in the Battle of the Five Armies. The songs that sound in the film (except for “The Greatest Adventure”, it’s “The Hobbit Ballad”) are written in verses from the book.
Work on the painting lasted five years. The animators were Japanese from Topcraft, who later worked under the guidance of Hayao Miyazaki: as a result, the drawing style and appearance of some characters (for example, Smaug or Gollum) may resemble classic Japanese anime [1] .
Release
In the USA in the 1980s, the cartoon was released by ABC Video on VHS. In the USSR and Russia, it was distributed on “pirated” video tapes translated by Alexei Mikhalev and Vartan Dokhalov . Also in Russia in the 1990s, it was distributed to VHS and translated by Yuri Serbin , Sergey Vizgunov and Alexander Kashkin (Pervomaisky) .
Awards
The filmmakers were awarded the Peabody Award , a prestigious award for outstanding contributions to radio and television. The film was also nominated for "Hugo" (in the nomination "best performance"), but lost to "Star Wars".
