The last representative of the I dynasty of Kish . All sources available to us that mention the name of Aggi (“The Royal List ”, the epic poem “ Gilgamesh and Agga ”, “ Tummal Inscription ”) unequivocally state that Agga was the son of the previous king En-Mebaragesi . All these sources belong to a later time, modern Aggi inscriptions are not preserved. The “Tummal Inscription” mentions Aggu as a builder in the Nippurian sanctuary, in particular, he rebuilt Tummal there - the Ninlil temple of the divine wife Enlil .
The epic poem “ Gilgamesh and Agga” tells how Agga, through ambassadors, demanded from the ruler of the city of Uruk the famous Gilgamesh , who at that time was in a relationship subordinate to Kish, to participate in the irrigation work undertaken by the kish ruler. Gilgamesh refused, then Agga went over to direct military operations and besieged Uruk. During this siege, Agg was defeated and captured by Gilgamesh. However, for unclear reasons, Gilgamesh graciously treated the captive and released Agga to freedom.
Although the “Royal List” narrates that during the reign of Aggi, Kish was defeated and the general Sumerian throne was transferred to Eana (that is, to the “House of Ana” - the temple of the sky god Ana ( Akkad. Anu ) in Uruk), setting in time after I dynasty of Kish I dynasty of Uruk . Then he says that after the first dynasty of Uruk, the first dynasty of Ur followed. However, already the poem “Gilgamesh and Agga” declares these two kings contemporaries, and the “Tummal inscription” goes even further, writing to them contemporaries also the kings of the 1st dynasty of Ur Mesanepada and his son Meskiangnun . And it was Mesanepada who conquered the holy city of Nippur from Aggi and repaired the destruction there during the fighting. During these events, the gracious policy of Gilgamesh towards the defeated Agge becomes clear, it was more profitable for him to have an ally against the powerful king of Ur .
The “Royal List” ascribes to Agge, like all early Sumerian kings, an unnaturally long reign of 625 years.
