History
The oldest settlement in the territory of the nome, belonging to prehistoric times, was located on the site of the modern city of Drama . Later, the area was incorporated into the Roman Empire , the Bulgarian kingdoms, Byzantium , the Ottoman Empire . There were constant wars for the possession of this strategic region, from which approaches to Constantinople opened. This was reflected in the national composition of the inhabitants of this region, where, in addition to the Bulgarians and Greeks, there are Turks (in some communities more than half of the population), Pomaks and Roma .
In 1204 the Crusaders subjugated the territory; in the years 1223-1224 - Theodore Comnenus Duca , ruler of the Thessalonian Empire , in 1230 - the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen II . In 1242-1243 and 1246 he restored independence for a short time. In the early 1240s, John III Duca Vatac made another attempt to subjugate Thessalonica with the help of the blind Theodore Comnenus Duca .
In the 1300s, it remained restless because of the wars and confrontation between Andronicus II and Andronicus III (1321-1328), John Cantacuzine and members of the Paleolog family (1341–1347).
The Ottomans seized territory in 1383.
Drama became part of free Greece after the First Balkan War in 1913.
After the occupation of Greece on September 28, 1941, an uprising broke out in the region, which lasted until October 6, 1941, but was suppressed by the Bulgarian occupiers. About 3,000 people died.
