Biography

Born in the family of a railway worker. Later, the family moved to Sortavala , where Ilmari became a member of the local maritime club and participated in trips around Lake Ladoga . After reading the book of the best German ace of the First World War, Baron Manfred von Richthofen , Ilmari also decided to become a pilot. In the summer of 1932 he was called up for active military service and, as an assistant mechanic, was sent to the 1st separate squadron of seaplanes . In 1933 he entered the Karkhumyaki Brothers Aviation School and was able to obtain a license for a private plane pilot.

In 1936 he managed to get directions to the Finnish Aviation Aviation School ( Fin. Ilmasotkoulu , abbr. ISK), located at the airport Kauhava (Kauhava), near the town of Lapua .

On May 1, 1937, Yuutilaynen, with the rank of sergeant, arrived at As5, located at Suur-Merijoki airfield, a few kilometers west of Vyborg . Initially, he flew a reconnaissance aircraft, then in 1938 he was sent to the Utti airfield, where he was trained as a fighter pilot for several months.
