Origin and literary biography
He was a descendant of Girion, the last king of Dale. After the city was destroyed during the attack of the dragon Smaug in 2770 of the Third Age, the family of Girion fled to the city of Esgarot , and his descendants became ordinary townspeople.
The bard served as captain of the archers of the city guard in Esgarot, was known as a well-aimed archer, and was also “famous” among the inhabitants for his intuition. Also was respected by the inhabitants for their courage.
When Smaug Zolotoy attacked Esgarot, Bard was the first to notice the dragon flame at Lonely Mountain. If it weren’t for him, the inhabitants of Esgarot would simply have died without showing any resistance to Smaug. The "The Hobbit ..." describes how the Bard during the campaign of Bilbo and the Dwarves to the Lonely Mountain in 2941 of the Third Age killed Smaug with a well-aimed shot [1] , having committed a " truly heroic act " [2] . Smaug's scales were invulnerable to any weapon. The information that one of the diamonds fell off on the left side of the chest, which for many years had grown into the belly of the dragon while he was lying on the treasures, rattled a blackbird into Bard's ear when the Bard had only one arrow left. The bard, as a descendant of Girion, understood the language of blackbirds. As a result of the fall of the dragon killed by Bard, the city of Esgaroth was destroyed [3] .
After the destruction of Esgaroth, Bard sent messengers to the elven king Thranduil, king of the elkwood elves, and he helped the inhabitants of Esgaroth by sending them supplies of provisions.
After the end of the Battle of the Five Armies, the Bard received the fourteenth of the wealth of Smaug, which he shared with the burgomaster of Esgaroth and spent on rebuilding the city of Dale, which became the capital of the reborn kingdom of Dale, where he was crowned in 2944. T. Esgarot became part of it, but continued to use the right to local government. He gave Thranduil the emeralds of Girion.
Bard's son, Bain, became the king of Dale in 2977 T.E., after his death. The dynasty of the Bard descendants ruled in the Dale exempted from the dragon before the events of the War of the Ring described in the Lord of the Rings trilogy . King Brand, the son of Bain (reigned since 3007 T.E.) died during the Battle of Dale (March 17, 3019 T.E.) together with King Erebor Dain Zheleznostop, reflecting the attack of the Northern army of Sauron's allies. The great-grandson of Bard the Archer, Bard II, who became the king of Dale after the death of his father, lifted a siege with Erebor with Thorin Stonehelm (thereby winning the battle of Dale) and entered into an alliance with Gondor .
In adaptations
- The Hobbit (1977) - John Stephenson ;
- “The Fairytale Journey of Mr. Bilbo Beggins, The Hobbit ” (1985) - Boris Sokolov ;
- The Hobbit (movie trilogy, 2012–2014) - Luke Evans .
In the Hobbit movie trilogy, Bard is given more attention than in the original story [4] . He meets the gnomes and Bilbo when they, having escaped from the forest elves, moor in barrels to the riverbank, and helps them to quietly get into Esgarot. In the films, Bard is a simple boatman, and his confrontation with the mayor, who sees him as a people's troublemaker, is shown to be intensified. Before the fight with Smaug, Bard is released from the city prison, where he was imprisoned by the burgomaster and his henchman-servant Alfried. In the films Bard’s ability to understand the language of birds is not revealed, and his son Bain helps in the attack on Esgarot Smaug.
According to the plot, in addition to his son, Bard has daughters Sigrit and Tilda [5] , while in the Tolkien legendarium, Bain is the only descendant of Bard [6] .
According to Luc Evans, he and the team of filmmakers wanted to show Bard not as a professional warrior, but as an ordinary guy who is always ready for battle [4] . The actor is proud to have played the hero, who in the original story was the only plot-important representative of the human race [4] .
