Nature
Euritania is almost entirely located in the highlands of Pindom . It is famous for its ski resorts, which are located near the Karpenision in the Timfristos Mountains. The territory of the nome is crossed by the rivers of the Ionian basin : in the west, along the border of the nome, is the Aheloos river and its tributaries - Agrafiotis and Megdova.
The climate combines signs of the Mediterranean and mountainous. Winter is snowy, summer is warm. The GR-38 motorway passes through the city, connecting the cities of Agrinion and Lamia via Karpenision . The road passes through a large arched bridge over the Kremasto reservoir on the Aheloos river. In 2004, the Timfristos Tunnel was built through the mountains of the same name, 1.4 km long , in the south of the nome.
History
Euritania was inhabited from 6000 to 5000 BC. e. The Euritanians [1] [2] ( Greek Ευρυτάνες ) were the first settlers. Then the region was captured by the Romans and became part of the Roman , and after the collapse of the latter - part of the Byzantine Empire . In the XII-XV centuries. Euritania is part of the despotate of Epirus , later the Ottoman Empire . Unlike other parts of Greece, where Turkish government was quite tough, Agrafa County was able to confirm its autonomy. After 400 years of foreign domination and after the Greek liberation war , Euritania became part of Greece. The region was rural and very poor, the Second World War and the Civil War also had a very negative impact.
In 1947 , Euritania became a separate nome, separated from the nome of Aetolia and Akarnania. From the late 1940s, the economy began to grow, peasants moved to cities. There was electricity, radio. In the 1950s, the GR-38 motorway ran through Eurithania, which made it possible for tourists to come here to the ski resorts. In the early 1990s, the Internet appeared in the region.
