Keratomileusis ( other Greek κέρας - cornea and σμίλευμα - carving) is a surgical operation to correct the refractive property of the cornea of the eye , during which a thin layer of corneal tissue is cut with a surgical excimer laser or other device.
Microkeratomy is usually used to cut a layer, but a femtosecond laser can also be used to form it. Before the advent of the excimer laser, keratomy was done by freezing a thin layer of the cornea, and then it was processed as an optical lens . After thawing, these new layers are below the front surface and thereby improved vision. Currently, the LASIK procedure is the most widely used during the keratomilosis procedure.
