It occupies a large part of the Chalkidiki peninsula . In the north and north-west it borders with the nome of Thessaloniki , and on the other sides it is washed by the Aegean Sea . On the territory of this region are the peninsulas: Kassandra , Sithonia and Athos . The capital is Polygyros . Halkidiki is a beach tourism center in Greece. Also on the peninsula is Petralona Cave - the place of discovery of the remains of the most ancient man in Europe.
