History
On the territory of the nome, near the today's village of Vergina, is the ancient capital of Macedonia - the city of Eges [Greek Αιγες]. Here the Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed the tomb of Basileus of Macedonia, Philip II, father of Alexander the Great the Great. Eges Vergina, together with the sanctuary of Dion at the foot of Olympus, the next capital of Macedonia, Pella, and Thessaloniki, the modern capital of Macedonia, form the historical and tourist Ring of Macedonia.
