Content
History
The history of the city began with the fact that as early as the 19th century, doctors recognized the microclimate of a high-altitude valley as useful for patients with pulmonary diseases. Robert Louis Stevenson, who was treated here, wrote the novel “ Treasure Island ” in Davos. The city is also the scene of the novel The Magic Mountain by the German writer Thomas Mann . In March 1929, the famous philosophical dispute between Ernst Cassirer and Martin Heidegger took place in Davos.
Sports
In 1913, the first and only European Bandy Championship took place in the city, the victory in which was won by the England team [2] . Since 1923, the Spengler Cup has been held annually in the city - an international hockey tournament.
In the middle of the XX century, the city gained popularity as a ski resort . Since 1971, the World Economic Forum (sometimes called the Davos Forum) has been held annually in the city.
The city holds the record for the number of world championships in figure skating . They were held in it 11 times, the first competition of this level was held in the XIX century in 1899 .
