Biography
At nineteen he abdicated. In 1221, together with a group of dissatisfied with the politics of the bakufu feudal lords, he attempted a coup d'etat, the purpose of which was to restore real imperial power, but failed ( the Jokyu confusion ). He was exiled to the Oka Islands, where he died.
In 1201, he ordered the compilation of a new imperial poetic anthology, which, at his suggestion, was called “ Sinkokinvakasu ” (“Compiled Again by Kokinshu ”) [3] . His mentor in poetry was Jien .
On his initiative, several more poetic anthologies were compiled and a number of poetic competitions were held. He was also famous for his musical talent and blacksmithing. The emperor’s literary heritage consists of several poetic collections, including the home anthology Gotoba-in goshu, the diary Gotoba-in sinki, the poetic treatise Secrets of the ex-emperor Go-Toba (Gotobain gokuden) and a treatise dedicated to a description of the palace customs, - "Sezokusensenshissё".
I pity people.

I despaired of thinking
About the sorrows of this world
And plunged into his sadness [4] .
