He played 1383 matches in the NHL , scored 208 goals and made 750 assists. For high growth, 193 cm, he received the nickname "Big Bird" from the fans. He was part of the famous "Big Three" defenders of the " Montreal Canadiens ", which included Serge Savard and Guy Lapuent .
Robinson made his debut at the Montreal Canadiens in 1971, and Guy Laffleur appeared on the team with him. After the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup 4 times in a row, many hockey players began to end their careers. Ivan Cournoyer , Ken Dryden , Guy Lafleur, Serge Savard and Guy Lapuent, left the club and coach Scotty Bowman . Many believed that Robinsonβs time had come to an end and it was time for him to think about ending his career. The time for new hockey passed in the NHL, the New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup for four years in a row, then came the time for the Edmonton Oilers ; The Montreal Canadiens were no longer taken seriously. In 1986, Larry Robinson and his longtime partner Bob Gainey , as well as young goalkeeper Patrick Roy, won the Stanley Cup . Robinson accepted the offer to move to the Los Angeles Kings , where he played with such masters as Wayne Gretzky and Jari Curry . After playing three seasons, Robinson decided to end his career as a player. He holds a record - 20 consecutive seasons of participation in the Stanley Cup playoff games , with 17 of them in the Montreal Canadiens. He is also the holder of another absolute record - +730 per career in terms of " plus or minus " [1] .
Larry Robinson was well known in the USSR, he played for the Canadian national team in the Canadian Cups and the Challenge Cup . He also took part in the 1981 World Cup , where he was recognized as the best defender and was included in the symbolic team of the championship, despite the fact that the Canadian team at this tournament was left without medals. Robinson himself believed that he saw on the field, in addition to partners in the Big Three, two great defenders: Bobby Orr and Vyacheslav Fetisov .
The coachβs career has also been successful, his longtime Montreal partner Jacques Lehmer invites him to the New Jersey Devils , becoming an assistant. In 1995, New Jersey won the Stanley Cup for the first time. After that, Robinson leaves for Los Angeles , where he becomes head coach. But the three seasons in California brought nothing but experience. Larry Robinson returns to New Jersey and invites Vyacheslav Fetisov, with whom they win the Stanley Cup in their first joint season.
Larry Robinson is a member of the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame , a sweater with his number 19 hanging under the arches of the Bell Center .
