It is named after the English master of the XIX century Henry Bird , who developed this debut. Among the flank openings , in contrast to the very popular English beginning , Byrd’s debut is not considered the most promising way to gain an edge due to the early weakening of the white flank. Therefore, in grandmaster practice this beginning is rare. Among the high-class players who sometimes used this move, we can name Bent Larsen and Mikhail Gurevich .
