History
The first Duke of Wittelsbach Otton I and his son Ludwig I were able to significantly expand their hereditary possessions in Lower Bavaria . For the defense of new territories to the north-east of Munich, near the Isar River , on a high hill in 1204, Landshut Castle was built (in German translation - “protector of the land”). Under the protection of the fortress, local residents reached out and a city quickly formed at the foot of the hill. It began to be called as well as the castle, which eventually acquired a new name - Trausnits.
Until the sixteenth century, Landshut was the residence of one of the courtyards of the Wittelsbach dynasty in Lower Bavaria. The remaining three were in Ingolstadt , Munich and Straubing .
In Trausnitsa, Ludwig IV of Bavaria kept in captivity Frederick the Beautiful , the Duke of Austria, the son of the German king Albrecht I , who was killed in 1308 by his nephew Johann Swabian .
In 1475, George Bogaty , the son of the Bavarian Duke Ludwig the Bogaty , got married here with the Polish princess Jadwiga . This event went down in history as a Landshut wedding .
A noticeable trace in Trausnitsa was left by the Duke William V the Pious , who was the ruler of these places from 1545 until moving to Munich in 1579. Inspired by the park landscapes of Italy , he built a wonderful garden that descended from the castle along the hillside to the Isar River . Exotic plants grew in this garden, unprecedented animals were found, for example, lions. The walls of the castle were decorated with valuable paintings. William V turned out to be such a passionate collector that he squandered almost all of his inheritance on paintings. Court life here went from holiday to holiday, jousting tournaments, hunting trips were organized, the best Bavarian artists and musicians came here. A special loggia was built on the northern corner of the fortress walls, where one could, while listening to music, inspect the surroundings.
The most interesting structures of the castle include a spiral-shaped "staircase of jesters" in the western wing of the castle. The wall around the steps is decorated with images of typical characters of the Italian comedy del arte : Pantalone , Filumena , Harlequin and others. Once these masks made the duke and his courtiers laugh.
