Not to be confused with the concept of French Municipalities .
The district ( French arrondissement ) in France is an administrative-territorial unit, smaller than the department . 101 departments of the country include a total of 342 districts, so on average 3-4 departments are included in one department. The capital of the district is generally called suprefecture . If the main city of the district is the capital of the department, it has the status of a prefecture .
In turn, the districts are divided into cantons and communes . Distinctions should be made between districts and so-called municipal districts, which are administrative units of cities such as Paris , Marseille and Lyon .
