Coaching career

Söderberg did not achieve serious success as a player. For several years he played for the capital's Engby, a Swedish minor league club, and in the 1970s began his coaching career. For a long time, it also happened to be far from big football: during the 1970s and the first half of the 1980s, he coached the lower Swedish league clubs Wester ( Swedish BK Väster ), Brommapoikarn and Sponga . In 1986, he became the Djurgarden club coach from the second league, and in two seasons he managed to bring him to the top Swedish division . In 1991, he became an AIK club coach from the outskirts of Stockholm , with whom in 1992 he achieved his highest success as a club coach, winning the Swedish Championship.

Since 1993, he began working at the Swedish Football Union . Since 1995, he coached the youth team for three years, and then, after the resignation of Tommy Svensson in 1998, he became the coach of the national team of Sweden . Under his leadership, Sweden reached the final of the 2000 European Championship ; in the same year, his assistant Lars Lagerbek was appointed co-coach of the team.

Under the leadership of the coach duo Söderberg — Lagerbek, the Swedish national team qualified for the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 European Championship , and in the final part of both tournaments was able to leave the group in the playoffs, where, however, they lost to their rivals. After the 2004 European Championships, Tommy Söderberg left the national team under the sole control of Lars Lagerbek, and he returned to coaching with the youth team.

Under the leadership of Tommy Söderberg, the youth team was not able to qualify for the European Championships in 2006 [1] and 2007 . [2] At the 2009 European Youth Championships in Sweden, Tommy Söderberg led the team with Jörgen Lennartsson . [3] Under their leadership, the team reached the semifinals, scoring 12 goals in four games. [4] In the semifinals, the Swedes lost to the English break with a score of 0: 3, but were able to equalize; in the penalty shootout, the Swedes lost. [3]
