Biography
Early years
Knut Posse is a Danish by origin, his father, the knight Jöns Lage Posse, came from a Danish family, but settled in Westerötland . There he married the daughter of a lagman, and his eldest son Knut got a name from a powerful grandfather from his mother Knut Jönsson.
In the 1460s he became close to aristocrat Eric Axelsson Tott . Tott was a very authoritative person, so thanks to his connections with Jöns Posse in 1466 he got into the riksrod , and Knut Posse got an appointment to Finland.
After his appointment as regent in October 1466, Tott appointed Posse to be a headquarters in Stockholm fortress.
However, already in September 1470 , he, returning to Finland, was present at the county court in Yanakkala, possibly as the personal representative of the governor of the Tavastia province Eric Axelsson Tott.
On October 10, 1471, Posse commanded troops against the Danes at the Battle of Brunkeberg and was seriously injured. In 1473, Posse was elected a member of the riksrod. Since the fall of 1473, he was a forgery of Eric Axelsson Tott in the Tavastehus fortress, and in 1477 he received it in flax possession.
Service in Finland
In 1483, after the death of Eric Axelsson and his brother Lars, the Totti fortress, with the exception of Raasepori, went to the regent, Wall Sture. Posse was the person in charge of the sale of hereditary property in Vyborg in 1481. In 1483, the last time, the third of Axelsson, Ivar, authorized him to transfer to Stura all military equipment of Vyborg and Olafsborg . At the same time, Posse went to the service of Stura and received from there the fortress of Tavastehus for annual payment.
In the fall of 1485, he cut the lines of communication of the Livonian Order on the shores of Estonia , when Sweden supported the hostile city of Riga . In 1487, Stura set about finalizing relations with the Tottas. Then Posse surrounded the fortress of Raasepori, which was under the rule of Ivar Axelsson, as well as Borgholm in Åland. In the autumn of the same year, the period of truce with Novgorod was drawing to a close, and it was useful to use military pressure in further negotiations. Posse was the commandant of the Vyborg fortress until the situation subsided. Posse, who was well acquainted with the affairs of the Ostseen provinces, was used as a parliamentarian in the negotiations. He was a member of the Swedish delegation during the armistice with the Livonian Order on October 9, 1487, and also, together with the abbot of Abos Cathedral Magnus Nikolai Särkilahti, when signing the peace between Sweden and the Order in Reval November 17, 1488 .
War with Russia and Vyborg Thunder
At that time, the strengthening of the Moscow Principality began and its expansion began to increase in the direction of the Baltic Sea . The Swedes were very concerned about this and would like to have the Livonian Order in the allies. Probably, at this time the friendship of Posse and Magnus Nikolai was born, which went through the trials of the next decade. Her strength is noted in the episcopal chronicles of Finland.
In 1490, he was appointed commandant of the Kastelholm fortress on the Åland Islands . From that moment he actively participated in the meetings of the State Council of Sweden. He was a supporter of the conclusion of peace with the Livonian Order for a joint struggle with the Moscow state. However, in 1493 the order entered into an alliance with Ivan III . In the same year, the Danish king made peace with him. The offensive of the main Russian forces on Vyborg began in September 1495. The defense of the city was led by Posse, commandant of the Vyborg castle castle , who arrived in Vyborg a year earlier. Despite the great numerical superiority of the Russians, on November 30, Swedish troops under Possé command managed to repel the assault. In December, Russian troops left Finland. The reason for this was the food shortage, as well as the plague epidemic that broke out in 1495 in Western Finland.
Recent years
In the summer of 1496, Posse took part in the capture of Ivangorod , then returned to Vyborg and remained there until July 1497 . On May 15, 1496, the Council of State gave him the county of Osse in Westerötland for 30 years for his life-long use and his heirs. On June 27, 1499, he received Castelholm as well for life.
Posse died on March 25, 1500, presumably in Castelholm. The literature often claims that Posse was buried in the Abos Cathedral. The statement is based on the mention in the Episcopal chronicles of Finland that Posse died in the same year as Bishop Magnus Nikolai, and on the supplement of the chronicler: “And so they did not part even in their death.”
