Creativity

Sollertinsky is one of the largest Soviet music and theater critics of the 1920s - 1930s. Possessing a phenomenal memory, deep knowledge and brilliant oratory, Sollertinsky was one of the most prominent figures in the cultural life of Leningrad at that time. Very popular were his lectures and articles, designed in an elegant, accurate style. One of Sollertinsky’s main areas of interest was ballet , a large number of his works in the 1930s were devoted to this art. Sollertinsky was one of the first in the USSR to study in detail the work of Mahler and Schoenberg , wrote a number of monographs on Soviet and foreign composers, and numerous articles in Soviet newspapers and magazines.

A well-known writer, a close friend of Sollertinsky, Irakli Andronikov spoke of him like this:

He was a talented, [...] musicologist, critic, publicist, outstanding philologist, theater expert, historian and ballet theorist, a brilliant lecturer, a man of phenomenal education, wit, wit, memory - a professor at the conservatory, who also taught in Theater Institute, and at the Choreographic School, and at the Institute of Art History, where, by the way, at the verbal department, he taught courses in logic and psychology, and visited the other department as a student. And when he received his teaching salary, he sometimes signed in the financial statement, as it were, by mistake, in Japanese, Arabic or Greek: an innocent joke of a man who knew twenty-six foreign languages and one hundred dialects! [four]

For many years Sollertinsky was connected by friendship with the composer Dmitry Shostakovich , which influenced the development of the composer's work. Shostakovich’s second piano trio, written in 1944, is dedicated to the memory of Sollertinsky.
