Presidium of the SFRY

Presidium of the SFRY ( Serbhorv . Chairperson of the SFRred , Predsedništvo SFRJ , Slovenian. Predsedstvo SFRJ , Macedonian Chairmanship of the SFR -) is the state body that headed the SFRY . The Presidium was first formed in 1971 according to amendments to the Constitution of the SFRY and was reorganized in 1974 with the adoption of a new constitution. In the period from 1971 to 1974, the Presidium consisted of 23 people - 3 representatives from each republic, 2 representatives from each autonomous region and the President of the SFRY Josip Broz Tito . In 1974, the number of members of the Presidium was reduced to 9 — one representative from each republic and autonomous region and the chairman of the Presidium of the UCC by office. In 1988, according to an amendment to the constitution, the representative of the UCC was expelled from the Presidium.

Representatives of the republics and autonomous regions were elected by the respective parliaments for 5 years. In total, according to the new constitution, elections were held 4 times - in 1974 , 1979 , 1984 and 1989 . In some cases, early elections were held if a member of the Presidium died while in office or left the Presidium for another reason. In this case, the powers of the prematurely elected member of the Presidium continued only until the expiration of his predecessor. The same person could not be elected more than 2 times in a row.

In 1989, representatives of Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were elected by popular vote; Parliaments only approved this choice.

Before his death in 1980, Tito, who served as the country's president for life , was the permanent chairman of the Presidium. After his death, representatives of all republics and autonomous regions took turns chairing for one year (Macedonia - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Slovenia - Serbia - Croatia - Montenegro - Vojvodina - Kosovo). In 1991, this order was violated when the outgoing chairman of the representative of Serbia, Boris Jović, prevented Stipe Mesic from taking office automatically. Mesic became the chairman of the Presidium only on July 1.

In the fall of 1991, representatives of Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina stopped participating in the activities of the Presidium. The remaining 4 members of the Presidium continued their work until June 15, 1992 , when Dobrica Chosic was elected the first President of the FRY .
