Kensei

Kensai ( 剣 聖 kensai , master of the sword ) is an honorary title in ancient Japan given to a warrior for his skillful use of the sword. The most famous Kensai is Miyamoto Musashi , although some did not consider him Kensai. Historical kensai often founded sword schools. Although there is no such written rule, the name bears such prestige that it is generally believed that no more than one kensei can exist at a time.

Values

Depending on the character used in writing, “ken” can mean both “sword” (剣) and “fist” (拳), and in Okinawa the term kensei means “master of the fist”. The hieroglyph聖 ("sei") also has the meaning of "saint." So, the title of Miyamoto Musashi translates as "Holy Sword".
