Formed on November 3, 1918, by order of the 5th Army of the Right-Bank Group of Forces under the name of the 1st Infantry Division, on November 7, 1918 it was renamed the 26th Rifle Division.

World War II
In the army from September 19, 1941 to May 9, 1945.
On June 22, 1941, it was stationed in Dalnerechensk . On September 1, 1941, one of the first divisions from the Far East began the transfer and arrived in Yaroslavl , September 18, 1941 marched on Valdai , September 24, 1941, attacking the enemy from the march ( SS Division “Dead Head” ) in the Luzhno -Kraseya area [ 3] . In these battles, the division lost about a third of its combat strength. Until January 1942, the division held defenses in the Luzhno area. On January 7–9, 1942, the 87th Rifle Regiment (returned in the summer of 1942 ) was withdrawn from the division into the army reserve.
In February 1942, she took part in the Demian operation , and on February 20, 1942 she closed the encirclement of the enemy’s Demian group. March 20, 1942 brought to the rear for a vacation.
March 25, 1942 put forward on the eastern bank of the Lovati River. It fought for the so-called Ramushevsky corridor .
After a lull from November 30, 1942 to February 1943, she again participated in the offensive on the Ramushevsky corridor .
In August 1943, she participated in an attack on Staraya Russa .
Subsequently, she participated in the Starorussko-Novorzhevskaya offensive operation , the liberation of the Hill , Bezhanitsa , Novorzhev , the Pushkin Mountains , the capture of Koenigsberg , and the forcing of the Velikaya River.
