Biography
Johann Christoph, during his lifetime, had a reputation as an excellent composer, equal only to that of his nephew, Johann Sebastian. He was organist Eisenach and, later, a member of the court orchestra, ibid. His brother, Johann Michael Bach (father-in-law and uncle of Johann Sebastian Bach), was also a composer. A number of works previously attributed to Johann Sebastian, as it turned out recently, belong to Johann Christoph. One of his most famous works is the cantata Meine Freundin, du bist schön, based on the Song of Solomon. The eldest son of Johann Christoph, Johann Nikolaus Bach , was also a composer.
Despite his musical career, Johann Christoph experienced financial difficulties, which was why he was probably not chosen to be the guardian of Johann Sebastian after his parents died. By the time of his death in Eisenach in 1703 he was in immense debt.
