The 1964 US presidential election on November 3 was one of the most unambiguous elections in US history, held with the undeniable advantage of President Lyndon Johnson . Johnson replaced the murdered John F. Kennedy as president just a year before, but was able to successfully transfer the enormous popularity Kennedy possessed. Moreover, Johnson was also able to successfully introduce Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater as the right-wing legislator who wants to destroy the social insurance programs created by Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s. Johnson claimed that Goldwater would plunge the United States into a nuclear war with the Soviet Union (the Democrat team defeated this thesis in a Daisy commercial). Having such trump cards in his hands, Lyndon Johnson received 61.1% of the vote and won in 44 states out of 50. This was one of the brightest victories unprecedented since the victory of James Monroe in the 1820 election .

- (a) electors who, unlike ordinary ones, are not bound by a promise to vote in accordance with election results. This situation arose several times in the mid-20th century, usually among democrats due to disagreements on issues of segregation and civil rights for the purpose of subsequent bargaining.
