John Jesus Flanagan ( Eng. John Jesus Flanagan ; January 9, 1873 - June 3, 1938 ) - American athlete , three-time champion of the Summer Olympics .

John Flanagan was born on January 9, 1873 in Ireland and later emigrated to the United States. He began to serve as a policeman and engaged in hammer throwing . He won the US championship seven times and in 1900 at the Paris Olympics became the first Olympic champion in this discipline. Also, he became seventh in discus throw .
At the next Games that took place in St. Louis , Flanagan defended his champion title and also won a silver medal in throwing weight of 56 pounds and took fourth place in discus throw. At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, Flanagan became the only three-time champion in his favorite discipline. In addition, he became the ninth in the discus throw and, together with his team, stopped at the quarter-finals of the tug of war tournament.
After completing his sports career, Flanagan returned to Ireland and lived there until his death on June 3, 1938 .
