Despite the difficult political environment in which Herod had to rule, his reign was marked by great splendor. Judea under him intensified and significantly expanded its borders. This began to inspire the Romans with fear, and after the death of Herod, Emperor Augustus divided the country between his three sons. Archelaus got the central region - actually Judea , Idumea and Samaria - but without the coastal Greek cities of Gadara and Hippos (they moved to the Roman province of Syria). Antipas received Galilee and Pereus ( Zaordanje ), and Philip received the South Syrian possessions of Herod (Trakhoney, Bataney and Avranitida ). None of the princes was awarded the royal title. Archelaus became an ethnarch, and his brothers became tetrarchs. Both of them safely ruled their possessions for several decades. Archelaus himself was in power for only ten years. In the year 6 BC e. for numerous abuses, Augustus stripped him of power and sent him into exile in Gaul. Judea became a Roman province.
In 37, the emperor Caligula granted the royal title and the tetrarchy of Philip (who had died by then) to Herod I’s grandson, Agrippa I. Two years later, the emperor sent his uncle Antipas to Spain, and transferred his possessions to Agrippa. In 41, Agrippa obtained permission from the new emperor, Claudius , to attach Judea to his possessions. His brother Herod II received the kingdom of Chalcis at the foot of Lebanon . Thus, for a short time, the country again became a vassal kingdom. But in the year 44, after the death of Agrippa, she finally departed under the power of the Romans. In the year 49, after the death of Herod II, Agrippa II (son of Agrippa I) was declared king of Chalkis with the right to supervise Jerusalem . Shortly before his death in 53, Claudius annexed the former tetrarchy of Philip (i.e., Bataney, Trahoney and Gavlan) to his possessions. In 66, Agrippa II tried with all his might to stop the beginning of the Jewish rebellion, but, seeing that this was impossible, left Jerusalem and left for his kingdom. The rebellious Jews expelled his troops from the city and burned his palace. Later, Agrippa II helped Vespasian in subduing Judea. After his death, all the Jewish lands were given over to the authority of the Roman governors ( procurators ).
