In subsequent works, Macklin deliberately refused to follow the path that led him to massive success, and in the mid-1970s he lost his contract with United Artists . Interest in the work of the singer arose again in 1980, after the release of the album Chain Lightning ; Roy Orbison's “ Crying ” cover again brought him to the charts. But this “rebirth” turned out to be short-lived: since 1983, Macklin, having no contract, for several years earned a living by touring, reluctantly performing “American Pie” and focusing on country rather than folk audience [1] .
Later, he was again in the center of attention of critics: the albums For the Memories (1990, a collection of pop, country and jazz covers) and River of Love (1995), an album of copyright material [1], received high marks.
Childhood and adolescence
Donald McLean III was born in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York , on October 2, 1945. From early childhood he was interested in music and already in his teens got a guitar. I also tried to do opera singing with my sister; often visited the pool. All this was very useful to him in his career as a vocalist.
At age 13, Don was a newspaper peddler. Then in 1959, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash . The newspaper headlines he saw served as a pretext for writing his most popular song, “ American Pie ”. In 1961, Macklin became involved in folk music and finally decided to become a professional musician.
