History

The GEO issue was launched by the Hamburg publishing house Gruner + Jahr in 1976 . The magazine has also been published in France since 1979 , and in Spain since 1986 [1] . In 2011, it also goes to: Bulgaria , Hungary , Greece , India , Italy , Latvia , Lithuania , Romania , Slovakia , Slovenia , USA , Turkey , Finland , Croatia , Czech Republic , Estonia , South Korea , Japan .

In March 1979, the first issue of GEO France magazine was published in Paris. It is so popular that the publishing company Prisma Press becomes the second largest publisher in France. In the early 1980s, the magazine began to change. Along with his traditional travel topics, reporting on cities and countries, observing animals and exotic cultures, GEO is increasingly interested in topics related to the future of mankind as a whole: ecology and the environment, demography, the use of natural resources, and food problems. Thus, GEO becomes not only informative, but also a public magazine. In 1987, GEO Spain opens in Madrid. From July 1994 to this day, the GEO editorial office in Hamburg is headed by Peter-Matthias Gede. In 1996, the editors launched the children's magazine GEOlino. In Russia, its analogue is called "GEOlenok".

In March 1998, the first issue of GEO was released in Russia.

In autumn 2004, the first issue of GEOtraveller magazine, a quarterly travel magazine for wealthy readers, was published.

Since 2004, GEO has launched magazines in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Croatia, Slovakia and Turkey, in December of the same year in Italy, and in the spring of 2006 in Slovenia and Greece. In the spring of 2009, the magazine in a green cover is published in more than 20 countries. The last in March 2009, Brazil joined the GEO family.

In Russia

In Russia, the journal has been published since March 1998 [1] under the license of GEO International GmbH. Theme of the first issue: "Castles of the Loire." The editorial office of GEO Russia is located at 123557 Moscow, Stolyarny per., House 3, building 6. [1] [2]

In 2003, the children's magazine “GEOlenok” appeared on the Russian market and immediately became one of the most popular magazines for children in the country [3] .

From December 2003 to October 2006, GEOFocus magazine was published - an informative and informative publication that tells about history, architecture, biology, technology, sports, psychology and much more. It was integrated with GEO magazine in order to consolidate the readership of these popular scientific publications [4] . In 2004, 2005 three special issues with the best materials came out.

In the summer of 2009, during the restructuring at the Gruner + Jahr Publishing House, the GEO, GEOTraveller and GEO film magazines were merged into a single edition of the GEO group of publications. On November 24, 2009, the sale of the Russian division of Gruner + Jahr to the German publishing house Axel Springer (Axel Springer Russia) was officially announced.

In September 2015, due to new legislative restrictions in the Russian Federation for foreigners (since 2016, they cannot own more than 20% of the media publishing company), Axel Springer sold its Russian division to A. Fedotov, owner of the Artcom Media publishing house (publishes L'Officiel, Numero, Port and SNC magazines). Details of the transaction were not disclosed [5] . The new owner decided to close the magazines of the GEO group. In December 2015, the final issue of the magazine was published and the editors were dissolved.

On March 30, 2016, the ACMG media group announced the signing of an agreement with the publishing house Gruner + Jahr GmbH Co KG [6] . Thus, in Russia the printing of the GEO magazine, the children's application of GEOlenok and Gala Biography, as well as the operation of the site www.geo.ru were resumed.

In March 2018, the magazine celebrated the 20th anniversary of its release in Russia. Then the editor-in-chief was replaced.

In August 2018, ACMG holding, which owns the Russian version of Forbes, decided to reduce the staff of three publications that were recognized as unprofitable: GEO, GEOlenok and Gala Biography magazine about the life of stars. The editors are in conflict with the publisher, who twice this year replaced the chief editor. Earlier, a representative of the media group Dmitry Ozman said that the magazines will not be closed, but will reduce the frequency of their release. Magazines had large debts [7] . The September issue of GEO did not come out.
