Biography
Born in the family of an officer. In 1867 he moved to London, where he married Emma Stansfield Grandi. He founded a small company selling Swedish steel. Later he organized the production of multi-barrel card cases and small-caliber rapid-fire guns of 37 and 57 mm caliber, which were used, among other things, in the Russian Navy. In 1888, his company merged with Maxim 's machine gun company. In 1896, the combined company was bought by Vickers Limited , while Nordenfelt himself left the company.
Nordenfelt, along with George Garrett, was also engaged in the construction of submarines, building four pieces. One of them was sold to Greece, two of the Ottoman Empire. The fourth boat was offered to Russia, but after tests that showed its low combat value, they refused to buy it.
In 1903, he returned to Sweden and retired.
