Regiment Formation and Campaigns

The regiment was formed on February 14, 1831 in Brest-Litovsk from the third battalions of the Brest and Bialystok infantry regiments , under the name Modlin Infantry Regiment. On February 16, 1831, the 3rd battalion of the Ryazan Infantry Regiment was attached to the regiment . On January 28, 1833, the Modlinsky regiment, with the addition of the 1st and 3rd battalions of the 51st Jaeger regiment, was made up of four active and two reserve battalions.

In 1840, the Modlinsky regiment was sent to Abkhazia . In May 1844, the Modlins were again moved to the Caucasus and repeatedly participated in expeditions against the highlanders . On February 23, 1845, a battalion of the Ryazan infantry regiment was added to the composition of the Modlinsky regiment. On December 16, 1845, the 2nd and 3rd battalions were allocated for the formation of the Dagestan infantry regiment , and the Modlinsky regiment was brought in 1846 into four battalions.

In 1849, the Modlins were moved to Transylvania and, being in the detachment of General Leaders , participated in battles with the Hungarian rebels at Fogarash , Reich and Germanstadt .

With the beginning of the Crimean War, the Modlinsky regiment was appointed to the detachment of General Leaders and participated in the siege of Silistra . At the same time, the 5th and 6th reserve (December 4, 1853) and 7th and 8th reserve (March 10, 1854) battalions were formed in Russia. On April 24, 1855, the 2nd, 4th, and 6th battalions formed the Modlinsky Reserve Regiment and were appointed to strengthen troops in the Crimea . On June 17, 1855, these battalions arrived in Sevastopol and took part in the valiant defense of the city . On August 15, the Modlinsky regiment occupied the Kornilovsky bastion on the Malakhov Kurgan and for 12 days withstood the French bombardment heroically. On August 27, during the assault on the Malakhov Kurgan, the Modlins met the French with bayonets and, after a fierce hand-to-hand combat, made their way through the enemy that surrounded them. On the Malakhov Kurgan, the Modlinsky regiment lost the commander of the regiment, Colonel Arshenevsky, 11 chief officers and 1,144 lower ranks killed. For valiant service on the Malakhov Kurgan, the 2nd, 4th and 6th battalions were granted August 30, 1856. The St. George banners with the inscription "For Sevastopol in 1854 and 1855."

At the end of the war, the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th battalions were abolished, the 4th battalion was assigned to the reserve troops, and the regiment was brought on Aug. 23. 1856 in the composition of three active battalions with three rifle companies. On April 6, 1863, from the 4th reserve battalion and indefinite leave, the Modlinsky reserve regiment was formed, named August 13, 1863 as the Simferopol Infantry Regiment . March 25, 1864 number 57 was added to the name of the Modlinsky regiment.

During the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. The Modlin Regiment guarded the Black Sea coast near Akkerman . On April 7, 1879, the 4th battalion was formed from three rifle companies and the newly formed 16th company.

During the Russo-Japanese War, the Modlin Regiment was sent to the Far East and, having joined the 2nd Manchurian Army, took front lines on the river. Honghe. On January 15, 1905, the Modlinsky regiment, occupying Beitai-zi, repulsed two Japanese night attacks. During the Mukden battles, the Modlinsky regiment, defending the same village, repelled a number of attacks during the day and retreated only in the morning of February 17, having lost the regiment commander Colonel Kondratsky, 11 officers and 400 lower ranks. Occupying February 22, 23 and 24, the village of Santayzi at the grove of the Imperial graves, the Modlins regiment with bayonets repulsed all the swift attacks of the Japanese and kept the village behind them. On February 25, the Modlins were surrounded in the village of Vazye by the Japanese, but despite strong crossfire, they broke their bayonets through the enemy’s thick chains. The heroic actions of the Modlinsky regiment in the Battle of Mukden were marked on June 8, 1907 with the highest award - with signs on hats with the inscription β€œFor Mukden in 1905”. On March 3, 1905, the Modlinsky regiment took part in a rear-guard battle near the village of City-Changgou.

On November 26, 1907, in order to preserve the memory of the glorious joint service of the army and navy during the defense of Sevastopol, the Modlinsky regiment was named the 57th Modlinsky Infantry General-Adjutant Kornilov Regiment.
