U-197

U-197 - a large ocean-going German submarine of type IXD2 from the Second World War . The order for the construction of the submarine was given on November 4, 1940 . The boat was laid down on July 5, 1941 at the AG Weser shipyard in Bremen under building number 1043, launched on May 21, 1942, and went into service on October 10, 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Robert Bartels.

Combat Service

The boat made one combat campaign, sank 3 vessels with a total displacement of 21,267 gb , one vessel damaged (7,181 gb ). Drowned on August 20, 1943 south of Madagascar , in an area with coordinates , depth charges from two British Catalina-type aircraft. All 67 crew members were killed.
