U-179 is a large ocean-going German submarine of type IXD2 from the Second World War . The order for the construction of the submarine was given on May 28, 1940 . The boat was laid down on January 15, 1941 at the AG Weser shipyard in Bremen under building number 1019, launched on November 18, 1941 , went into service on March 7, 1942 under the command of Corvette Captain Ernst Sobe.

Combat Service
The boat made one combat campaign, sank one ship, 6,558 gross . Drowned on October 8, 1942 in the southern Atlantic, near Cape Town , in an area with coordinates , depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Active . The entire crew of 61 people died.
