U-179 is a large ocean-going German submarine of type IXD2 from the Second World War . The order for the construction of the submarine was given on May 28, 1940 . The boat was laid down on January 15, 1941 at the AG Weser shipyard in Bremen under building number 1019, launched on November 18, 1941 , went into service on March 7, 1942 under the command of Corvette Captain Ernst Sobe.
